HUNDREDS of women have joined the fight against cancer by signing up for this year’s Wirral Race for Life.
Taking place in Birkenhead Park on Sunday, July 21, the Globe-backed event raises much-needed funds for Cancer Research UK.
Last year, 3911 women took part in the Wirral race, raising £173,895.
This year, organizers need 4000 women and girls to stride out to help raise £175,000. So far, 250 women have registered.
The cash is used for advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the North West.
Laura Taylor, the charity’s North West events manager, said: "The support for this year’s Wirral race has been fantastic, so far. We’ve had more people register than at the same time last year.
"Obviously, there's still a long way to go until July, and I'm confident the support will continue to grow and we will our targeted number of people taking part on the day.
"Race for Life is non-competitive. It's not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer.
"Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.
"Participants may be decked out in pink or fancy dress but what's inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer.
"Don't be fooled by the tutus and tiaras. Wirral Race for Life is cancer's worst nightmare.
"Thanks to everyone who has taken part in the Birkenhead Park race over the years.
“It is because of not just their support, but that of millions of women doing the same across the country, that Cancer Research UK has been able to make progress against many forms of the disease.
"But the battle against cancer never stops and for this reason we need everyone to return to the fight in 2013 and bring new recruits with them."
