BENIDORM star Crissy Rock will head the cast of a musical play about Cammell Laird shipyard when it returns to Liverpool later this year.

The Liverpool actress, who plays Janet in the ITV comedy drama, appears in Down Our Street at the Royal Court Theatre in the city centre from April 12-27.

Presented by Active Drama Productions Limited it follows the world-famous shipyard from its early days, through difficult times and to the present day.

Joining Crissy will be a host of Royal Court regulars, including Wirral actress Suzanne Collins and Roy Brandon.

Also in the cast are Liverpool comic legend Micky Finn, returning to his acclaimed roles in the piece, and Lynne Fitzgerald, Linzi Germain, Lesley Butler and Lenny Wood.

Written by the group's artistic director Brian McCann, the production premiered at Birkenhead Town Hall in 2003. It was also staged in 2004 and last seen at the Unity Theatre, Liverpool in 2011.

The script features a number of memorable music and songs capturing the town's spirit through good times and the bad.

Through drama, comedy and song, Down Our Street celebrates this through the eyes of the people of Merseyside and the workers 'down the yard'.

On the new cast, Brian McCann said: "It's an exciting production to be part of. Crissy is one of the loveliest and funniest people I've met. She is guaranteed to bring a lot of fun and laughter to the production.

"I've worked with Suzanne and Micky on several occasions. They’re two great friends and great actors who both bring the stage alive as soon as they step onto it.

"Micky Finn had the audience in tears every night last time he appeared in the show, mind you he usually had me in tears in rehearsals."

He added: "Mention Cammell Laird and everyone’s got a story to tell.

"Birkenhead was built around the shipyard and people from all over Merseyside, the country and the world came to work or were connected to 'the yard'.

"It's the fantastic cast we’ve put together, along with the play that guarantees a great night out…Down Our Street'
