Birkenhead Park . . . 13pts Hull . . . . 10pts

BIRKENHEAD Park caused an upset by defeating third-placed Hull on Saturday in a gripping North One encounter.

Birkenhead produced a performance full of passion and determination to deservedly take the spoils to gain an important victory which saw Park move one place up the league table above Stockport on points difference.

Park were soon behind after Danny Jones was penalised and sin binned for obstructing a probable Hull try. Guy Martinson kicked the simple penalty for a 3-0 lead after only five minutes.

Alex Davies, making his first appearance of the season after returning from New Zealand, equalised after 10 minutes as Park looked to gain the upperhand. After 20 minutes, flanker Danny Jones scored a try. Davies converted and then added a penalty.

Hull hit back with a try from second row Chris Murphy which was converted by Martinson. Park led 13-10 at the interval.

In the second-half, Hull became increasingly anxious as they failed to create any chances against a spirited Park defence.

This was a great team effort by Park, with Ashley Olliver outstanding in the back row and it should do a lot for team morale and confidence. Wingers Jamie Pollock and Greg Hughes both put in excellent work in attack and defence.

This Saturday, Park entertain Lymm in an Intermediate Cup second round tie. Kick-off at the Upper Park is likely to be 2.30pm.
