Wirral woman to run London Marathon in nephew's memory
A WIRRAL mum is hoping to raise thousands of pounds in memory of her nephew who lost his fight with meningitis.
Sue Jamieson, from Prenton, is set to take part in the London Marathon in aid of the Meningitis Trust as a tribute to two-year-old Liam who died almost 20 years ago.
The 39-year-old’s challenge comes after local teenager Daisy Metcalfe died from the deadly disease just two weeks ago.
And Sue, who will run alongside her friend, Jane Hodgkiss, is hoping her fundraiser will go some way to boost awareness of the virus.
She said: "Liam passed away quite a long time ago now but the pain and heartbreak is still there for us all.
"I remember he had been getting over chicken pox and the doctor thought his symptoms at the time could have been the after effects of that but my sister wasn’t happy so she took him up to Arrowe Park.
"He was transferred to Alder Hey and sadly died. Although we knew about meningitis and what look out for, there was no near as much awareness as there is today.
"But I still think meningitis is difficult for doctors to diagnose straight away so awareness needs to be boosted. We feel everything that Daisy’s family are going through because for us it was such a shock and happened so quickly – our hearts go out to them."
As part of their fundraising, mother-of-four Sue and Jane are working tirelessly to organise car boot sales, coffee mornings and bag packing sessions at supermarkets.
And they are hoping they Globe readers will help them to reach their target of £3,200.
Sue added: "We're training hard about four times a week and are not letting the snow or ice get in our way.
"We are determined to raise at least £3,200 for this very important cause and boost awareness as much as we can.
"If this goes well, we would definitely consider making this an annual event for us and get more people on board."
