A GANG of robbers raided a Wirral store demanding cash from staff.

The incident happened at the Co-operative shop in Laird Street in Birkenhead at around 8.55pm on Saturday when five men approached the counter and threatened workers.

One of the gang hit a member of staff before escaping with cash.

Police are now examining CCTV images and are conducting house-to-house enquiries. Patrols have been stepped up in the area.

Officers said staff were not seriously injured but were “shaken” by their ordeal.

The gang were all wearing dark coloured clothing and had their faces covered.

Detective Sergeant Toni Tate said, "I would urge anyone with information about this incident, particularly those who may have seen a group of males matching these descriptions acting suspiciously in the area before the incident to contact us."
