FIREFIGHTERS extinguished a blaze in a pile of rubble near a Wirral retail park last night.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called to the scene in Thomas Street, near Hind Street, Birkenhead just after 8pm.

The fire in approximately 50-square metres of rubble in a yard was extinguished by 8.50pm.

Watch Manager Simon Ashton said:  "A large amount of smoke was drifting from this fire.

"We also had to slow down as we neared the area due to smoke affecting nearby roads.

"Contractors with businesses should ensure premises are securely locked to prevent unauthorised access and prevent fires of this nature. The fire was a suspected deliberate ignition."

Crews from Birkenhead and Wallasey fire stations attended the blaze.
