TRANMERE Rovers manager Ronnie Moore was “delighted” with his side’s performance as they drew against third-placed Sheffield United.

Saturday’s final score of 0-0 saw the club stay at the top of League One, ahead of Brentford on goal difference.

Rovers changed formation for the match, with Andy Robinson playing behind Jake Cassidy and Max Power playing in midfield in place of Danny Harrison.

And Moore said his players had competed with “the best” at the away game.

He said: “I think in the last 10 or 15 minutes we were the only side who was going to win it. They resorted to a lot of long balls which we’ve dealt with all day.

"To be fair I don’t think either keeper has had a save to make, we didn’t create much and they didn’t.

“But we’ve come here and competed with the best at this level – they’re capable of playing at the next level up so I’ve got nothing but praise for my lads. It’s fantastic to come here and get a point and we maybe could have nicked it."

Ronnie added: “I think what we planned to do today worked, all that was missing was to nick a goal. We were on the front foot getting at them without creating too much.

“It was like a game of chess in the first half but in the second we had a bit more belief, a bit more desire. I know other teams have won and they've closed the gap but we’re still top of the league.”

The manager praised defenders Ian Goodison and Zoumana Bakayogo as well championing striker Jake Cassidy’s efforts.

He added: “Goody has done well – the whole back four have. I thought Zoom was fantastic again. Blackman is a good player and Zoom has matched him for pace and he’s never really got in the game.

"But it starts up front and Cass has worked his socks off. It’s hard up there on your own but he’s chased and harried and put them under pressure.

“I’m pleased with the result but it would have been fantastic if we’d nicked it.

“We put Robbo in the hole because we knew both of their full backs bomb on for fun and if Robbo was out wide he’d have been taken to the wrong end of the pitch. So we put Michael and Adam out wide and I think it worked a treat.

“Danny took it on the chin. I wanted to see if we could put more legs in there to get them on the counter attack, that’s what we worked on all week. To a certain extent it worked, Max has been on the edge of the box a few times and has hit one that on another day might have been a great goal for him.”

Rovers will play Swindon, who are in seventh place in the league, away on Friday night, kick-off 7.45pm.
