Wirral historian donates collection to library

Bob Pullan
A WIRRAL historian has donated his entire collection of resources to a library in Birkenhead.
Bob Pullan, from Upton, has donated the material to Birkenhead Reference Library, for inclusion as part of its huge collection of Wirral-related information.
The Bob Pullan collection includes photographs, maps, and an index of residents and businesses going back to the 1700s.
Also included in the collection are photographs of Woodchurch Village before the construction of the estate.
The material is being systematically sorted and catalogued by the Upton local history group.
Cllr Chris Meaden, Wirral cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure said: "Researching local history is increasingly of interest to the public, and that is reflected in the regular Family History sessions that Wirral Council's libraries hold.
"Our reference collections and archives hold a treasure trove of data related to the ordinary people and businesses that inhabited Wirral in times gone by."
Birkenhead Reference Library already holds 8619 photographs either in hard copy or digitised, all of which are available to be accessed by the public.
The collection is open to donations by members of the public, including photographs, postcards and any other material tied to Wirral’s history.

Especially when you consider the poor conditions Birkenhead Reference Library keeps them in. A damp basement is not the place to keep irreplaceable material.
Wirral Archive Service is fairly new (2005) and has won awards for its storage facilities which are temperature and humidity controlled, water less fire suppression system and trained staff in record preservation.
The Archive Service is open all week, Monday to Friday (including Wednesdays) and is right by Hamilton Square so easy to access by bus and train.
If the Council wants to save money may be it should look at the way it manages it's archive material and consolidated it all in the purpose built archive instead of building well past their best.

Perhaps we should also send a book there too. Just to remind the Wirral public of what they used to look like before all the libraries were closed down to pay for Councillors expenses and the massive pay-outs for failure to Senior Officers.
