A WIRRAL primary school's Green credentials have been recognised this week.

The pupils from Lingham Primary School, taking part in a series of activities and initiatives as part of 'Switch Off Fortnight', received a special Green Flag Eco Award in recognition of their progress as an Eco School.

It is the top award presented by Keep Britain Tidy as part of its Eco Schools initiative.

To earn it, a school has to have environmental issues engrained across the whole school and undergo an assessment from an Eco Schools co-ordinator.

Cllr Ellis and the Mayoress presented the school with their certificate during  a visit to the school on Wednesday.

Also attending was Cllr Brian Kenny, cabinet member for the environment, who was things that the pupils were doing to support 'Switch Off Fortnight'.

Organised through EDF Energy’s national education resource - the Pod - it aims to encourage schools to reduce their energy consumption and inspire families and friends to adopt the same good energy habits.

Lingham is one of 26 local schools taking part in Switch Off Fortnight, which ends on Sunday. Nationally, more than 4,000 schools are involved.

This year’s activity focuses on the 'take it home' message, encouraging pupils to inspire families and friends to save energy at home too.

Pupils were set the task of auditing the energy wastage in their households, from appliances on standby to lights left on and talking with their family members about why it is important to save energy and to think differently about how they use it.

Cllr Kenny said: "Switch Off Fortnight is about changing attitudes to using energy and it could lead to reduced carbon emissions and also lower energy bills too.

"I've been so impressed with all the work the children at Lingham Primary have been doing and at their enthusiasm for the environment.

"They were telling me all about the checks they do and that they also tell their parents to switch things off at home.

"It is fantastic that children this young are educating their parents about the importance and benefits of saving energy!"
