The first of Wirral Council’s “super-directors” have been announced.

Kevin Adderley, former director of regeneration, housing and planning, has landed the post of interim strategic director, regeneration and environment.

And the role of strategic director families and wellbeing has been secured by Clare Fish, former chief of staff at Oldham Council where she was in charge of a programme of major changes.

A further post – strategic director, transformation and resources - has been advertised and an appointment is likely to be made before Christmas.

Council leader Cllr Phil Davies said: “The two newly-created strategic director roles will lead to significant savings in our senior management structure and lead to increased efficiencies across the whole spectrum of the Council.

“Strong corporate management is essential if we are to rise to the challenges facing the council. I am delighted with these appointments and welcome the dynamic approach I’m sure they will bring to the role.”

The restructuring of management throughout the local authority is forecast to save a third in management costs as the Council strives to protect its frontline services.

Ms Fish’s department’s responsibilities include children’s social care, learning and achievement, planning and resources, local and specialist personalised support and care governance.

Mr Adderley will take control of environmental services and streetscene, parks and countryside, theatre and art, regeneration and planning, housing and transport services.

The trio of new strategic directors will be well paid for their efforts – the salary range is between £109,626 and £121,807.

Chief executive Graham Burgess said the remuneration package has been benchmarked against comparable levels elsewhere in the region and the posts will be funded from savings made under the senior management review.

In September, Mr Burgess told the Globe: "These new posts will play a vital role in transforming the authority by providing additional strategic leadership capacity and helping to lead and deliver the council’s improvement plan."
