Your Wirral Globe is nominated for British journalism award

YOUR Wirral Globe has been shortlisted for the “Oscars” of British journalism.

The nomination is extremely unusual for a local newspaper like the Globe, and we find ourselves coming up against the giants of Fleet Street.

We are among nine nominees for the Press Gazette British Journalism Awards under the category Investigation of the Year.

Our four-year investigative coverage of the scandal surrounding Wirral Council whistleblower Martin Morton has seen the paper compared to heavyweight teams at The Times, The Sunday Times, Channel 4, The Independent and the respected Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

The judges who shortlisted us include former Sunday Times Magazine editor Robin Morgan, former editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme Kevin Marsh, the Director of the Society of Editors, Bob Satchwell and David Banks, a former editor of the Daily Mirror.

Martin Morton’s explosive revelations – published exclusively through the Globe – have led to vulnerable adults being paid back £700,000 wrongly taken from them because of a flawed policy which the council denied for years, despite Martin’s evidence.

Wirral Globe Editor Leigh Marles said: “The work of our journalists, spurred on by a courageous whistleblower who refused to be silenced, has cast a national spotlight on a local scandal that otherwise may have gone undetected.

“It’s extraordinary for us to be nominated for such a prestigious national award that recognises the work the vast majority of journalists do in calling to account those in power.”

In an article published today in The Press Gazette, its Editor Dominic Ponsford writes: "The standard of entries was superb, with the investigation of the year category alone attracting more than 40 high-quality entries."
