Wirral students learn lessons of Auschwitz
4:30pm Tuesday 30th October 2012 in News
Auschwitz-Birkenau camp
WIRRAL MP Alison McGovern accompanied students from schools in her constituency to the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.
Students from South Wirral High school, Wirral Metropolitan College and Bebington High Sports College in Wirral South returned from the Holocaust Educational Trust’s visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau on Thursday vowing to act on the lessons learned from the experience.
They were among more than 200 other post-16 students from across the North-West on the Project, a unique opportunity to learn about what happened at Auschwitz-Birkenau, to pay respect to those who lost their lives, and to explore the universal lessons of the Holocaust and its relevance for today.
The students will now use the experience to commemorate and educate others about the Holocaust at their schools and in their local communities.
Now in its thirteenth year, the Project is based on the premise that "hearing is not like seeing".
Students first visited Osweicim, the town where the Auschwitz death and concentration camps were located and where before the war, 58% of the population was Jewish.
Students then visited Auschwitz I to see the former camp's barracks and crematoria and witnessing the piles of belongings that were seized by the Nazis.
Finally they spent time at the main killing centre of Birkenau where the day concluded with candle lighting and a period of reflection to remember the victims of the Nazis killed in the Holocaust.
The Lessons from Auschwitz Project visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau was preceded by a seminar in the UK where participants were introduced to Jewish life in Europe before the War.
Following the visit, the students attended a seminar to reflect on the visit and discuss their personal responses to it.
The fourth part of the project requires all students to pass on the Lessons from Auschwitz to their schools and wider community.
In this way, as many young people as possible benefit from the Lessons from Auschwitz Project.
Government funding has enabled the Trust to facilitate regional visits to Auschwitz, as part of its Lessons from Auschwitz Project for thousands of students each year.
Alison McGovern MP said: "I cannot underestimate the importance of visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau and recognising the full extent of the Holocaust.
"These events may have taken place over 60 years ago but we need to continue to teach the lessons of the Holocaust to the younger generations in order to fight bigotry and hatred today.
"I look forward to seeing how the students will communicate their experience to their peers and am encouraged that many more students will have the opportunity to participate in the course in future years.
"I hope that this will ensure that the Holocaust is never forgotten and that its lessons are truly learnt, disseminated and acted upon.
Karen Pollock MBE, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said: "We are delighted that Alison joined us on the visit with students from her constituency.
"The Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project is such a vital part of our work because it not only gives students the chance to learn about the Holocaust but to understand the dangers and potential effects of prejudice and racism today on a local and national scale."

Let's teach them about Hamas, Hezbollah, Yasser Arafat, Walid Jumblatt. and all the others who have never sought peace.
Let's teach them about the Jewish Land back in the time of King David.
Let's teach them about the slaughter of Jews (in Palestine) by Arabs, in the run-up to WWII
Let's teach them about the Arab Nations who seek the annihilation of Israel.
Let's teach them about the Islamic persecution and killing of Coptic Christians throughout North Africa.
Let's teach them about the terror attacks on Synagogues throughout Europe.
Let's teach them about the rise in attacks on Christians throughout Lebanon, as the power base shifted towards Muslim Rule.
Let's teach them about Muslim gangs grooming their peers for prostitution.
Let's teach them about the Colonization of Britain by the Theological Ideological followers of Islam.
Let's teach them about the Islamic Caliphate, AKA The Arab Spring.
Let's teach them about the Muslim Brotherhood and how “Once Moderate (Muslim) Nations” are now implementing radical policies in favour of a more fundamental Muslim Rule.
Let's teach them about the demographics of Britain and how their own town (like many others) is moving towards a Muslim Population.

Wow....just wow. Not so subtle hijacking of this terrible place and it's ghosts (RIP) to further an agenda there. Then again what better chance for the students to compare and contrast the actions of politicians, complicit media and willingly manipulated public that led to it. In the company of a politician, no less.
...
Racism and prejudice is thriving in the UK. It is not only alive and well it is rampant and enforced by laws introduced by McGovern and Co. in the last Labour government. It just has different targets...and slightly different methods of targetting them...these days.
...
I wonder how that woman has the brass neck to travel to such a gods-forsaken place to cry crocodile tears for the victims of the past when she has been an instrumental part of an insidious mission-creep of a thousand "progressive initiatives" that have led us one step forward and two steps sideways into the spying on, segregation and villification of citizens in her own country today.
...
Our government doesn't yet put people in camps but it is undeniable that the politics in play then and now regarding an individual rights and civil liberties are comparable. I do hope the students take note and especially of the sickening hypocrisy on display.

Firstly Tautology "Let's teach them about the demographics of Britain and how their own town (like many others) is moving towards a Muslim Population" Are you ACTUALLY serious? How is the Wirral moving toward a muslim population? Where is your evidence for this?
And Spiffy, first of all, if I'm correct, Ms McGovern played NO PART in Parliament pre-2010, so how she took any role in the laws introduced is beyond me. And I'm not the Tories biggest fan, but to compare them to the Nazi's is a step too far. you both want to make comments about hatred, I suggest you start with yourselves.

I stated "Their Own Town", that being Birkenhead. You obviously haven't been there lately, if ever!
I never speak for other posters as a rule, but Spiffy is right. Discrimination laws have created Discrimination.
And yes, Labours (potty) "Positive Discrimination", has catapulted the effect.
As for "Racial Hatred", I suggest you ask the chap who stole the Anti Tank Mines, and brought them to Birkenhead about that subject! That's once the anti terrorist branch have dealt with him.
Please spare me the "Bigot" calls,
I am a much travelled and informed person on an anthropological level. Surprise Surprise, not your every day illiterate bigot hey?
You will find many more like me, who become coloured by political failings and the refusal to listen, a bit like yourself!

I compare them to nazis ? Where, precisely ? I've very clearly stated (now paraphrased) that the politics of the past are comparable to the politics of the present on this subject. Human beings finding ways to segregate, denormalise, persecute and kill each other is nothing new and it has never stopped. I doubt it ever will and the only relevant point is that the Nazis were probably the most efficient at it to date...with full public approval, no less (!). Many of their tactics in initiating and sustaining that approval... if not quite ALL of their actions... are at play today.
...
It is beyond the pale to compare the confinement and extermination of 6+ million people to the introduction of a few Laws...or to try to justify just how far past a fair balance those laws go....when they now serve the minority far better than they have ever served the majority yet this is precisely what McGovern and Pollock have done in their public statements. End racism and prejudice by supporting racism and prejudice ? Uh...ok...
...
Agree or disagree with me but there is absolutely nothing of "hatred" in my post. Not that your accusation of it matters much to my opinion....that hasn't changed....but in the interests of even a half decent debate I will respectfully and politely request that you stick to the subject and keep your personal opinions to yourself.
...
Thank you.

Good question and neatly linking to our own discussion so my answer would be...If they become politicians and travel to Europe and back espousing support in the media for them inferring that anyone who doesn't is committing a nazi-like act ...then yes.
...
Otherwise, the analogy fails.

AyveeBee wrote:You will find as demographics shift, just like in other parts of the country. Areas become less diverse, as communities build their Mosques, Halal only food outlets...and subsequently an Islamic mono-culture.
So your ability to read and write precludes you from holding "bigotted" views, does it? seems a quite bigotted view. your response to Spiffys comments again seems to of fallen short again. Ms McGovern is a member of the Labour Party, therefore must of been a part of the "positive discrimination" rules? My parents voted tory, can I blame them for the changes to benefits payments?and as for your comments regarding the population of Birkenhead, I work in the town centre, so feel I'm ideally placed to be able to comment on the LACK of diversity there.
This can be seen in conurbations like: Bow, Bethnal Green..with major cities well on their way: London, Birmingham, Leicester, Bradford, Bolton, Burnley, Stoke.
When these areas reach a majority Islamic population (which, in time, will include Birkenhead), the indigenous population becomes a discriminated minority.

All i said was that "Two wrongs do not make a right"
And as these children went to see a place where there is a plaque that states that approx 1 million Jewish people died during the second world war (The original plaque stating that over 6million died at Auschwitz was removed some time ago as it was incorrect) I thought that it would be only fair to show the children that Palestinians are dying today at the hands of Israel (The Jewish State) in much the same internationally recognized illegal ways.
