Wirral youngsters in care meet Children's Minister
10:24am Monday 29th October 2012 in News
WIRRAL youngsters in care met with the Children’s Minister to discuss how they are reaching out to others in their situation.
Members of Wirral Children in Care Council spent time with Edward Timpson in London last week to tell him about their new website and ‘welcome pack’ for young people in care.
The group has a key role in designing support and services for the children and also sit on the fostering panel.
Councillor Tony Smith, Wirral’s cabinet member for children’s services and lifelong services, said: “It is fantastic that they had the opportunity to sit in the Department of Education and tell the minister about the new resources they helped develop.
“Similar services have always been available, but crucially, these new resources have had major input from ‘looked after’ children and young people themselves. We’re really proud of them.”
The new resources, which were developed with the input of the Children In Care Council, are designed to be used by children and young people when they first come into care, while the website is an ongoing information and support resource.
Julia Hassall, Wirral’s acting director of children’s social care, said: “The new resources are really impressive and will be very useful, particularly to young people who are new to care. We’re pleased that the people who helped develop them have had the chance to outline their contribution to the minister.”
