MORE than 5,000 people took part in Wirral's great weekend Coastal Walk.

Among them were 100 walkers raising cash for the Globe-backed Home From Home appeal - set up to fund a respite centre for Wirral Autistic Society.

Organisers say the Sunday event looks set to have raised £300,000 for local good causes.

The 15-mile annual walk, now in its 22nd year, is organised by the North Wirral Rotary Club. The club's Jim Costello said that initial estimates suggest in excess of 5,000 took part, making it the event's biggest turnout yet.

The route around the peninsula started at Seacombe Ferry then on to New Brighton, Leasowe, Meols, Hoylake, West Kirby and Caldy, finishing at Thurstaston Country Park.

Wirral Autistic Society's fundraising manager Rick Myers said: "It was a really great day with perfect weather.

"The money is still coming in, but it looks likelt that we're on course to raising around £10,000 for the appeal."

I was there on sunday, playing golf, and it looked like there was far more than 5000. It took 3 1/2 hours for all of the walkers to begin to trail off.
