UPDATE: FUEL BLOCKADE

A fuel protest at the Stanlow oil refinery in Ellesmere Port last night came to an end in the early hours of this morning.

More than 100 farmers and truckers began blocking the entrance to the oil refinery at around 8.30pm.

The protesters eventually moved off the road and vehicles are now moving freely in and out of the refinery.

The Stanlow plant was at the centre of the fuel protests in 2000 that caused some stations to run out of petrol.

Police said the protest was peaceful and no arrests were made.

Good on the farmers and truckers in this protest. The only way to get ANYone to listen is to have protests like this.More of the same please-for the good of us all. These farmers are standing up to be counted unlike the rest of us who never stand up and fight but continually moan how councils and governments never listen to us.Everyone who moans should get off their armchair soapboxes and Do something.Get up and let the ones who we elected know who their masters are and don't let them get away with telling US what to do.MAKE AN EFFORT.

You speak for yourself. I own a car. If they were off the road tomorrow(permantly) I'd be happy. All these selfish people do is put others out for a few days just because THE VEHICLE THEY OWN IS TOO BIG IN THE FIRST PLACE. Farmers-too much land for one person. Truckers-use trains or canals. How many road deaths a year? Don't protest about that though.

i was at the protest last nite and it went well we had about 40 trucks stopped at the gates but the police said if we didn't let them through they would start arresting poeple. did you know that the goverment receive around £35'000 in tax on every lorry that leaves stanlow, which means on the trucks we stopped there was 1.4 million pounds of tax and we only stopped a very small percentage of the trucks that leave there. it a joke

John, what are you talking about? Your philosophy seems to be-sod everyone else -every man for himself.Where are you coming from?
Posted by: john on 8:00pm Fri 2 May 08
What? Are you simple? A child could understand. Your first post deserves this. I'll say it again, read it slowly. You seem to think we ALL think and want what you do. No. I drive a car. A small car. I do approx. 5-6,000 miles a year. It costs me £10-15 a week. I don't have a problem. If ALL cars were taken off the road tomorrow, for EVER,I wouldn't be put out. They polute, they kill, they annoy and they provoke violence. Really, perhaps I do care for others. Who do you care for? Gas guzzlers. What car have you got? If it was small you wouldn't be complaining,so it's not small. You people should pay extra. You are. I'm glad. Go and cry to someone who gives a sh*t.

In general I agree with active protesting, provided that it is balanced and does not ending up being counter-productive. For example, if fuel supplies were blockaded for any length of time it would simply drive the price up yet more - the law of supply and demand, as recently happened in Scotland. The knock-on effects in 2000 were largely unforeseen (especially by Blair & co) and could have brought the country to a standstill, created food shortages, and brought the NHS to its knees with people dying for lack of medical supplies, staff etc.

John you have got some big chip on your shoulder. Why are you so bitter? You seem to care more for trees than you do for people.YOU are the simple one if you believe the environMENTALISTS that the world is going to end because of global warming. You are so gullible to believe everything the scientists, governmen
t and green party nutters say. Can't you think for yourself? Can't you do your own research or are you too lazy like everyone else who believes all that crap they give us?You've been caught hook, line and sinker by the green tree huggers.

John you really put your point of view across in such a mature way its a shame your use of grammar and spelling ability are similar to that of a lobotomised chimp.

John, you really are an idiot.I don't know anyone as stupid as you.Surely you're just winding us all up with your ridiculous comments? Please tell me you're not as stupid as you are.

Anyone with any sense knows the fuel prices are too expensive. It matters little what car you drive - even small car owners are paying over the odds. Diesel was promoted as the alternative some years ago and it was cheap but now lots of people are buying it the price is the highest of all.

We are conned out of our cash and our viewpoint is shouted down in so many ways in this country we have forgotten how to fight back. Like sheep we allow ourselves to be herded and do whatever our masters tell us.

Fuel protests in principle are a good idea as long as they do not harm the people they intend to help. It is about time we became more vocal about what happens to us in our own country and started objecting loudly when we do not agree with something.

Considering we are in a democracy with supposed freedom of speech, wht then did the Police threaten to make arrests over a peaceful demonstration?

WOTEVER! Bring back horses. And bikes. And flogging. And no,I'm not "winding" you all up. And no I won't tell you I'm as stupid I am!? If you have a problem TAKE IT TO THE PEOPLE WHO CAUSE IT,don't effect those that don't,ie the general public, which is what these blockades do. I don't mind paying £10-£15 a week to travel all over the place. Which is what I do. Small price to pay. SIMPLE. What part do you people not understand? The big words or the little ones?
Posted by: glenn fleetwood on 12:21pm Sat 3 May 08
Why don't you grow up,john?Start talking some sense will you.
Posted by: john on 2:13pm Sat 3 May 08
Cars are too cheap. Only the rich or wise should have cars. Virtually everyone on benefits has a car, some two! Explain that one. Petrol should be £5.00 a litre. That would give us all the equilibrium so desperatly needed. THERE'S JUST TOO MANY CARS. Crossing the road can take forever. They park on the pavement. Smaller roads are TOTALLY taken up with parked cars. THOUSANDS are killed every year,do you protest about that? NO. In my youth in the 70's, a friend and I would often cycle to Wales at the weekend. Nowadays I'm stronger and wiser but I wouldn't cycle to the bottom of my road! I'm not asking you to give up your car(I DO THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD THING) I am saying you and the other protesters are selfish, pains in the *rse. Don't tell me your doing me a favour protesting over fuel. If you still don't understand somebody out there will.

Alot of cars are bought very cheap,so anyone can buy one. But insurance isn't,so quite a few people(and that's enough people to add another 10-20% on top of mine and other law abiding folks premiums) Now,if fuel was more expensive,it would keep the trolls off the road. They'd have a harder time robbing fuel than,er,not filling in a form.

i work hard and i pay my taxes as i believe we all should, but with the dramatic rise in fuel costs and everything that goes with it (eg.the price of shopping) i am finding it harder and harder to get by. if the cost of getting to work goes up any more i will be better off not working and i am sure there are many other people in the same situation as me. i have worked at the same place for eight years and there is no form of public transport for me to use to get there. this country just helps the rich get richer and f*ck the rest of us. i think its about time we stood up for our selves.

John on

If your prepared to give up your car, why don't you? Stop talking bull and face up to the real world. Most people work all their lives to provide food for their families, and the odd luxury. Do you work? or are you another lazy bum?
Posted by: john on 9:09am Tue 6 May 08
lISTEN HERE MONKIES. I'm getting tired of repeating myself. While everyone else has a car,so will I. (All be it a small one that runs on VERY LITTLE FUEL) If however, say tomorrow, fuel became very, very expensive, too expensive for cars to be viable,ie take them ALL off the road,I would be VERY HAPPY. Now you two sad sacks might weep, and that would make me even HAPPIER! Do you read me now you pair of ******* ******?

On another UNRELATED point,I do work, but I am seriously considering packing in my job, just so I can claim benefits and annoy the likes of you two slaves.

I think the most worrying thing in all this is that my theory on the chav underclasses using home computers to vent their unintelligent nonsense is starting to come true. Please guys, leave forums to intelligent people and go and drink stella on your front garden settees.
