Wirral scarecrow festival cancelled again
The popular Thornton Hough scarecrow festival has been cancelled for the second year in a row.
The event was called off last year at the height of its popularity although it was expected to return this summer.
But this week, organisers revealed there would be no 2008 event and no decision has yet been made regarding the festival in 2009.
In 2006, the festival attracted more than 35,000 visitors from right across the UK.
It won the Mersey Award Tourism Award for Small Event of the Year in 2004 and the festival has previously raised £75,000 for village projects.

How bad is that !
My family have enjoyed this festival over the years, if Thornton Hough doesn't want visitors why for goodness sake did they start the feckin festival in the first place?
I suspect that this cancellation is caused by lazy nimbyists who have moved into the area and don't have the imagination or know how to make a scare crow !
I come from a long line of scarecrows, and if I had carried on the family tradition, it is said that I would have been outstanding in my field.
How bad is that !

I and all my family have enjoyed this event every year my grandchildren encouraged to take part in school. if the village has had enough public support(75,000) where did it go?
lets have this event in Birkenhead Park it can have all people taken part from all over wirral, schools comps , pub comps all charities comp and raise funds for all.
It appears a selfish crew are choosing when and how to have the event. please correct me if I am wrong. Why is it cancelled for the 2nd year running?

Seems to me it started out as a little village event,got to big and the village has had enough. Seems perfectly reasonable to me. There's no law "Das must be unt scarecrow event every year!"

This was a great event which was hugely popular but as with everything in Wirral which becomes successful, it ghot canned without giving notice or any valid explanation.
The villagers in Thornton Hough may not want the festival any more but they should say so and allow others to take the idea forward elsewhere on the Wirral instead of being indecisive and non-committal about next year. As has already been mentioned, this event could operate elsewhere around Wirral Wirral and terminate at Birkenhead Park or Vale Park in Wallasey at the end of a "Wirral Scarecrow Trek".
If Thornton Hough does not want to operate this popular Festival the say so and allow others to take it forward please.

There's not a patent pending on scarecrows! I do sometimes wonder the degree of intelligence of some of the contributors. If you miss it so much,set it up yourself,I doubt Thornton Hough will riot.

I do think it is sad this event has been cancelled but what started very small has grow too big. Would you like people walking round your house 24 hours aday for a week ? Also parking in the village is a problem.
