Midwife’s attitude 'cannot be tolerated'
FOLLOWING the Globe report ('Maternity services get glowing report', January 30), I write in disgust at the lack of care and understanding my 22-year-old daughter-in-law received while giving birth to twins at Arrowe Park Hospital.
She was taken in to be induced at 8am on January 22. My son was sent home at 9pm that evening after being told that he could not stay and to return at 11am the following morning.
Shortly after he left the hospital, my daughter-in-law asked the midwife to call her partner as the pains were very strong - the midwife insisted that she was not in labour and shouted at her telling her "not to behave like a silly little girl." This happened three or four times and the response was the same: "Stop being silly - get back into bed."
At 11.50pm she told the midwife she needed to push - it was only then they listened to her and proceeded to move her to the delivery suite.
The twins were born at 12:10am on January 23 on the way to the delivery room.
Thankfully, they are both well. We all know things can change quickly when in labour, but how dare the midwife speak in such a bad manner?
The bad attitude of this midwife resulted in my daughter-in-law going through the birth alone and with no pain relief. My son, who was not contacted as promised, missed the birth of his precious babies.
This midwife needs to re-train before she is allowed any further contact with vulnerable patients, who are in need of professional care. This kind of attitude cannot be tolerated and gives the true professionals a bad reputation.
No-one should ever be spoken to in this way.

Could you possibly qualify this rather sweeping statement? For example, explain your reasoning, refer to facts or even expand on "etc". Otherwise I'm afraid it makes you as bad as any of those you deride. Does a bad encounter with one social worker or the "etc" mean that they are all like that?

The reason for this problem is nothing to do with the midwife. The nanny state Dave mentions has made the public the wet, sentimental retards who can't face anything without being wrapped in cotton wool and having someone to blame when things don't quite go how they want. Maybe this lady was being a royal pain in the r's and acting like a stupid girl but mummy isn't going to say that is she? vulnerable???? she was giving birth like billions of humans have done for the last few thousand years, but in the safest ,cleanest, and easiest of all places in history if not the world. Try spawning on a packed underground platform during an early morning German bombing raid and then understand how pathetic you sound.

This does not surprise me. Years ago I was told I 'wasnt in labour' by several midwives who totally disregarded a week in total of painful contractions 3 minutes apart and an excruciating unusual pain. They just kept sending me home. Come back when they are 1 minute apart....
I collapsed on the last attempt to be admnitted and one young midwife, very busy and stressed herself I might add, happened to notice my baby was twisted inside me and had been jammed tight against my pelvic bone for all that time in distress.
All hell broke loose and it is thanks to that young girl that an emergency cesarean swiftly followed and thank christ we both survived although we were extremely poorly.
The midwife should have been giving that woman extra care because of twins and all the associated risks. I would strongly advise to make an official complaint, not for compensation but for at least an apology for the distress she caused and a review of procedures.
I am only sorry I didnt do it at the time or things might be different there now. I was just so relieved that someone had finally believed I was in labour and did something about it. Lots of girls arent so fortunate and babies die. It is so wrong.
I am glad both babies and daughter-in-law are ok and wish them all the best. It isnt clear if you are male or female but congratulations on becoming a grandmother or grandfather :)

As midwives working in the alleged trust we are astounded by the alleged complaints. Recently this trust was found to be the third best in the country for maternity care from a result of a survey of service users. We endeavour to provide women and their families with the highest standard of care and we would like to reassure women of the wirral we will continue to do this.

As a member of the public who has been subject to the procedures of organisations that are supposed to be responsible for my care I am [italic]astounded[/italic] that, when faced with evidence of any kind to the contrary, the organisation concerned will always effectively state :
'no you are wrong, we are doing everything we should and we are the best at what we do'.
The word 'endeavour' and 'assurance' always features somewhere in the protestation in order to give an implication, as opposed to irrefutable statement, of fact.
Where it can be proven that service fails there is always a 'good' reason and it is usually someone elses fault. More often that not the blame will be shifted to the complainant in some manner so avoiding the necessity for the vaguest of apologies.
This applies to any organisation you care to mention and the council are prime example of such.
In this instance we are talking about the safe birth of babies and the care of vulnerable women. How much more evidence does the trust need that it isnt good enough and that the neglect is life threatening in some cases ?
It can not be acceptable that some women are just so grateful to have got out alive that they dont complain.
Can every member of staff state in all good conscience, hand on heart, that the service they personally provide is impeccable? Failing that it is it even vaguely acceptable ?
'well it sez 'ere in this 'ere report that its good enough, so it is.'
Wait for the 'if anyone would like to raise a complaint it will be thoroughly investigated in line with our procedures'. Translate as 'go on I dare you'.
It just doesnt cut it really, does it. Its insulting to peoples intelligence and mealy-mouthed politician speak. Shame on those who perpetuate this environment of absolute authority from the top down. They should, and actually do, know better than to treat people this way.

I am sorry to hear about your daughter in law's experience at Arrowe. I was very lucky to have good care and felt the experience was good at Arrowe. I do think that you will always get the odd member of staff who may not be up to professional RCN standard.
Some of the peoples comments on here though are a little narrow minded. Maybe if some of these people trained to be nurse's, midwives or social worker's, just maybe they could improve what they feel is wrong. After all majority of these staff are bloody good and have worked very hard to get their professional qualification. Unfortunately now and then patients will get care that is not to a good standard. I really feel for the Twin's Mummy and family.

I must add that my wife was looked after extremely well at Arrowe for the birth of our 1st and 2nd child (96 & 00) however when our last one was born in 04 my wife was induced and left, 2 hours passed and my wife who by now knew the signs told me to get the midwife as it was time and she needed pain relief, I went to the desk and was informed that my wife would not be able to have pain relief as the midwife who was looking after my wife was (Having her dinner break), 45 minutes passed and my wife went to the toilet in agony about 4/5 minutes later I asked a midwife to check if she was ok then all hell broke lose, we were rushed straight from the ward to the delivery suite and our daughter was born about 5 minutes later with my wife being told it was to late for any pain relief and she should of asked earlier. I must say that the 1st two times we used Arroew we had perfect service and I dont know if anything changed after 2000.

at arrowe park with my 1st and only child i was told at 19 years old my baby could have a disabilty because they seen a shadow on her neck the midwives told me it would be best for me and my baby if i terminated her! i refused and said if the baby is born with an abnormality then so be it me and my partner will cope! however 9 months later on the 30th september i gave birth to a healthy "normal" 10 fingers 10 ten toes little girl! i was given the best care during my 2 hour labour and fourtnatley did not require pain relief as it wasnt the pain i had anticipated! i do however disagree with what some people
complain about there was a time of no pain relief and you had your baby behind a bush and then carried on with working so am sorry to offend anyone but i think your just being fussy and should be grateful that your getting some help!

Huh ? When was this exactly ? What country ?
As for 'help'...I paid years and years of National Insurance and more than qualified for the 'help' I was given bringing two children into the world. In fact I probably paid enough for a couple of other women too over the years since thats the basic premise of NI anyway.
The point is, I literally got the service I have paid for, it isnt 'free' and therefore I am not unduly grateful for the 'help'.
If the service is substandard then, like the customer of any other business, you have the right to complain and quite rightly should do so.

It's not a business. You tell me ONE F*****G BUSINESS were I HAVE to pay into it BY LAW? That's not a business. You sound the type that would sue the N.H.S. "because you can".

Jezza, for your education:
National Insurance contributions pay for the National Health Service (amongst other things).
If you work NI is taken straight out of your wages. You DO pay it by law.
Some benefit recipients have NI credits paid for them. In this case the 'taxpayer' pays it for you.
Regardless, it is a system that supports all british citizens needing health care and we all pay for it one way or another.

Terriann we do not live in Africa or India. Your comments regarding such in relation to british hospitals are irrelevant and ridiculous.
Women still have babies at home today with or without NHS support. I am not sure what your point is.
The rest of your post is a mess and devoid of punctuation but appears to suggest that anyone who complains is simply being fussy. Rubbish.
The NHS has a complaints procedure. Everyone who uses the NHS is entitled to complain about substandard service.
As for paying for the NHS see my previous post.
