AT last an ITV three-part drama that didn't leave me feeling I had wasted three hours of my life!
Whitechapel concluded on Monday with a denouement that lived up to the rest of this well constructed tale, which saw a copy cat Jack the Ripper killer on the loose in modern day London.
The quality of the cast was one of the reasons that this production excelled. Rupert Penry Jones as DI Joe Chandler, Phil Davies as DS Ray Miles and Steve Pemberton as Ripperologist Edward Buchan brought their characters to life with aplomb, as they tried to solve the crimes, each in their own way.
After failing to stop the murderer from dispatching several unlucky women, DI Chandler was determined to save the final prospective victim in Monday's episode. All he knew was that she would be red haired, would have a last meal of fish and potatoes and would be killed on a specific date. No pressure there then!
With time running out, the modern day Ripper was identified as a doctor from the local hospital, and he had earmarked a midwife he knew as that final victim.
In a riproaring finale Chandler and Miles managed to get to the scene of the impending murder and save the midwife, with Miles being stabbed in the process and the killer escaping.
Fortunately, as Chandler observed, having failed in his mission to emulate the Ripper, the murderer then killed himself, with his real identity set to remain a secret - just like the original Ripper.
