IT was hard enough for Rupert Penry Jones, saving good old Blighty from those darned terrorist types in Spooks, but now the poor man is taking on a modern day Jack the Ripper.
In Whitechapel (ITV1, Monday) RPJ takes on the role of fast tracked DI Joseph Chandler, who is far from the typical rough and ready, booze and baggage style of TV detective we have become used to in recent years.
For a start, he suffers from obsessive compulsive symptoms - and hates the sight of blood.
Not a good thing when you are faced with a series of hacked and gory victims!
Chandler and his new sidekick, DS Ray Miles - played with a scowl and a hint of derision by the superb Phil Davis - had the DI's theory that they were dealing with a Ripper copy cat murderer confirmed by the end of the first episode.
Lending a hand with the details of the original murders in Victorian England is Edward Buchan, an eccentric Ripperologist.
If you find the Ripper story frightening - and many people do have an irrational fear of the killer who was never caught - then this might be one drama to avoid.
It has atmosphere and a tension that made me jump a few times at the shaded appearances of the modern day murderer.
As Adam in Spooks, Rupert met an explosive death at the hands of terrorists.
If his Whitechapel character comes face to face with the man he is chasing, it could be an even messier demise this time.
Watch if you dare!
