Win tickets to see The Commitments

THE Commitments was one of the 1990s’ biggest films and some of its stars are coming to the Floral Pavilion Theatre in New Brighton later this month.

The Globe has tickets to give away for The Stars Of The Commitments show on Friday February 27 in an exclusive competition. More about that later...

It features a live band playing the movie’s soundtrack, which includes Try A Little Tenderness, Take Me To The River, In The Midnight Hour, Mustang Sally and Dark End Of The Street.

Directed by Alan Parker and based on the novel by Roddy Doyle, the BAFTA-winning, Grammy and Oscar-nominated film was released in 1992.

It followed the rags-to-riches story of a group of musicians that fell just short of stardom, mainly due to inter-band bickering but offers them a glimpse of hope. But, like all feel-good films, thanks to the leadership of ambitious manager Jimmy Rabbitte the band comes together.

Dublin-born Kenneth McCluskey played guitarist Derek ‘Meatman’ Scully in the movie and appears in the show.

He told the Globe: “If I wasn’t in the band, I’d pay to come and see the show myself. We did it at the Liverpool Empire in October and it went down really well, there were more than 1000 people in the audience. It’s our first time at the Floral and so I’m hoping we’ll have the same success there.

“Since October, we’ve played at the Jyvasyla Ice hockey stadium in Finland, which was brilliant. We’ve also done shows in Berlin and Hamburg, which was like going back in time because they look like something out of World War Two.”

The film won BAFTA awards for best director, best film, best editing, best adapted screen play and a Brit Award for best soundtrack. It earned Andrew Strong a nomination for the best actor in a supporting role.

Kenneth continued: “It has stood the test of time and is as fresh as it was when it first came out. All the music from the film is coming back. You hear teenagers singing it a lot these days and it would be really great to have someone like Duffy or Amy Winehouse sing with the band.”

We have three pairs of tickets to see The Commitments show at the Floral Pavilion. The prize also includes a chance to meet the cast afterwards, signed posters and signed original Commitments CDs.
