GEMMA Arterton is to star in the first theatre production to be filmed entirely by candlelight.

Shakespeare’s Globe On Screen returns for its fifth season from the London home of the Bard with The Duchess of Malfi.

But you can see the performance in Warrington on Monday when it is beamed to the Odeon in Westbrook.

The Jacobean tragedy is about the widowed Duchess of Malfi (Arterton) who longs to marry her lover, the steward Antonio (Alex Waldmann).

But her spiteful brothers, Ferdinand (David Dawson) and the Cardinal (James Garnon), are totally opposed to the match.

When their spy, Bosola (Sean Gilder), discovers that the Duchess has secretly married and carries Antonio’s child, they exact a terrible and horrific revenge.

The Shakespeare’s Globe on Screen season also includes four shows from the Globe’s summer 2014 ‘Arms and the Man’ season: Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Titus Andronicus and The Comedy of Errors.

Mark Foster, chief executive of the Arts Alliance, said “We’re thrilled to be bringing Globe On Screen back to cinemas with such an exceptional line-up for 2015.

"Authentically capturing the unique candlelit setting of this production of The Duchess of Malfi on film is an incredible achievement and a stunning opening to the new season."

Arterton made her professional stage debut at the Globe in 2007, when she won huge critical acclaim as Rosaline in Love's Labour's Lost.
