Globe guide to what's on 'over the water' in Liverpool


This year’s Lord Mayor’s Pageant returns tomorrow (Saturday, June 6) and is bigger, better and greener then ever!

Thousands of people are expected to take to the streets to enjoy the environmentally-themed parade which is part of the city’s Year of the Environment celebrations.

More than 300 bands will take part in this year’s Mathew Street Music Festival.

Plans are well in advance for the two-day August Bank Holiday music extravaganza which will see new themed stages focussing on cultures which have influenced Liverpool music including America, Ireland, country and western as well as 80s and rock.

This year, there will also be a stage dedicated to the memory of Radio City broadcaster Phil Easton, who died earlier this year.

It will feature some of his favourite music performed by original and tribute acts.

This year’s festival takes place on Sunday and Monday, August 30 to 31, between 11am and 6pm. More details will be released in the run up to the festival.

Liverpool City Council and St George's Hall has announced another magnificent Ball in the Great Hall on Saturday, July 11.

The Summer Ball 2009 welcomes the return of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko who will be joined by BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing stars Vincent and Flavia.

Enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the Walker Art Gallery with resident jazz masters Tony Judge and the Martin Smith Quartet playing alternate Sundays.

Hit comedy Beating Berlusconi enters its final run next week in the beautiful surroundings of St. George’s Hall.

Francesco Mellina and exhibition curator Pauline Rushton are giving free talks over the summer at the National Conservation Centre.

On Thursday, June 11, at 2pm, Pauline will talk about the exhibition from a curatorial point of view.

On Thursday, July 9, and Thursday, August 6, Francesco will discuss the inspiration behind his Sound and Vision: Music and Fashion exhibition.

The Echo Arena Liverpool plays host to Irish boy band sensation Boyzone on June 17.

All five original members will take to the stage and wow the audience with hit after hit.
