Wirral author Adele Cosgrove-Bray has a deep interest in local history and folklore and is chairman of Riverside Writers which meets at West Kirby Library.
In her online blog below, she talks about her efforts to develop a writing career, Riverside Writers, local current events and paranormal events.
Founded in 1998 by Val New, Riverside Writers has recently been experiencing a dramatic increase of membership. A year ago, the group was on the verge of being disbanded due to poor attendance, but this is most certainly not the situation now.
I've been having "fun" with technology lately. It all began when my old internet security suite needed completely upgrading as the software was about to be made obsolete. Therefore the old one had to be completely deleted and the new version installed. All seemed to go well until I tried to log-on to my internet service provider (ISP) when I discovered that apparently I no longer existed.
The Gladstone Theatre's One Act Drama Festival begins this week. The competition - the biggest and best in the Northwest of England - is currently celebrating its 21st Birthday. Wirral holds its very first literary festival between 7th and 12th of April, brought to you by Wirral Libraries and partially funded by the Arts Council, but also linked to Wirral Council's "Culture for All" campaign and supported by the Liverpool Culture Company as part of the European Capital of Culture 2008 festival.
Can you throw some light on this puzzling stone carving? Located on the foot of Caldy Hill, facing Thurstaston Common, this large slab of rock has obviously lain here for centuries, if not millennia. It is covered in lichen and moss, which has softened the edged of the graffiti carved into it. There's even a small face peering from the rock.
Whose bright idea was it to prune back the shrubs in Sandlea Park so harshly that only stumps remain? This quiet, green hideaway has been stripped just as most birds are looking for nesting sites. It will take around three years before the bare walls are covered with foliage again. Meanwhile, this restful oasis in West Kirby's traffic-heavy centre has been left without its aura of privacy and seclusion.
This blog is one year old already. If I was to bake a celebratory cake, certainly no help would be needed to blow the candles out. The strong breezes swirling over Wirral today are mild compared to last night's gales, though. That was a wild one!
