A MAN is in a stable condition in hospital after after he was attacked in a Birkenhead street on Tuesday afternoon.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of assault following an incident in Rodney Street. 

Police were called to Rodney Street at 5pm by members of the public reporting an assault in progress.

On arrival, they found a 29-year-old man lying on the ground outside a house, with injuries to his face and head.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital for further treatment. His condition is stable.

Following a search of the area, two men, aged 22 years and 21, were detained inside a flat on Whetstone Lane and arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault.

They have been taken to a local police station where they will be interviewed in due course.

A small part of Rodney Street and the flat in Whetstone Lane were cordoned off as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances leading up to the assault.
