MORE than two thousand women have signed up to take part in this year’s Wirral Race For Life.

Proceeds from the Globe-backed event, in Birkenhead Park on July 27, will help fund life-saving work of Cancer Research UK.

There are just over five weeks to go until the big day and organisers hope 3,600 women will take part, help raise £350,000. So far, 2050 have done so.

The Globe has been Race For Life’s official newspaper since 2006.

Jennifer Ward, northwest event manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “We are very grateful to the women who have already entered Race for Life at Wirral. But we still have places left so we are urging women to sign up as soon as possible.

“By raising money through Race for Life, people in the North West are helping Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists make advances in research which will help more men, women and children survive.”

The Globe has been the event's official newspaper since 2006.

Among those taking part is Amy Marsh, whose father Neal lost his battle with cancer in December 2000, aged 54.

Amy, 17, who will be running with sister Sam, said: "Taking part in Race for Life is my way of fighting back against cancer for taking my dad. I miss him every day.

"It's always an incredibly emotional event, but I know dad would be proud of me and that by taking part I’ll be helping other families have more precious time with their loved ones.

"That's why I want women in the Wirral to join me, because united we are stronger than this terrible disease."

Also taking part is Joanne McCann, in memory of dad William, who died from pancreatic cancer in January.

The 41-year-old retail manager, said: "It's going to be an incredibly emotional event, but I know dad would be proud of me and that by taking part I’ll be helping other families have more precious time with their loved ones.”

Joanne has taken part in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life for the past eight years - but this time will be doing it in honour of her dad. To add your name to the list of those signed up, visit www.raceforlife.org or call 0845 600 6050.
