Brian Joseph BARNES

Published on 30/04/2024

BARNES Brian Joseph Passed away peacefully at home on 10th April 2024, after a long illness. Loving husband to Gill, Dad to Alison, Catherine and Gillian, and Poppa to grandchildren Jamie, Kate, Lisa and Leon, and four great-grandchildren. Born in Preston in 1934 he swam in the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 then had a long career in leisure services. After retiring from his post as Director of Leisure Services for Wirral he sailed around the world in his boat Stratagem. Throughout his life he was a keen promoter of sport being accessible for all, particularly the disabled, and was invited to carry the torch for the Paralympic games. The family would like to thank all the nurses and carers who helped him to spend his last days at home. Brian did not want any fuss or flowers, a simple cremation only, but if anybody wishes to pay tribute donations to Claire House would be welcome,

My condolences to his family. He gave me a job at Livingstone Street Baths in 1977. I have fond memories; he was a gentleman and a super nice guy who always took time to stop and chat with me at pool side whenever he visited. Paul Davies.
